At Hope Rescue, we have the stray dog contracts for RCT, Bridgend and Vale of Glamorgan West. We also take in every single unclaimed stray dog from Torfaen, Merthyr and Blaenau Gwent.
This is regardless of age, breed, medical condition or behaviour – we work on the basis that every one of those dogs deserve the best possible chance. This can mean that we see a high number of dogs with complex medical and/or behavioural needs. Avocado is an example of one of these dogs.
This young Shar Pei was an unclaimed stray who came into our care four weeks ago. He is only a young dog - we believe he may not even be a year old yet. Avocado was very unhappy when he arrived with us – he was not comfortable around people and was very scared to be handled so would make a lot of noise to try to get people to leave him alone.
We initially took a hands-off approach to start to teach Avocado that we could be trusted and would listen and respect the body language he used to try to communicate that he was uncomfortable. It looked like Avocado was very keen to be around dogs so we introduced him to a couple of canine friends who he was then able to observe interacting with our staff. We also started to work on him accepting a harness and collar.
As you can see, he needs regular grooming and the team are working on teaching him this can be a positive experience. Fast forward four weeks and you can see Avocado is really starting to find his feet, build his confidence and build lovely attachments with our staff. He is currently learning how to comfortably wear a muzzle and cope with vet handling and we will then move on to introducing slowly to new people, so still a way to go but he’s doing so well.
We are thrilled with the progress Avocado has already made and feel sure he will continue to go from strength to strength. It takes time and resources to support dogs like Avocado to get them ready for adoption. But we remain dedicated to supporting vulnerable stray and abandoned dogs and to try to give them the best possible chance of success.
