Fostering a dog

Fostering dogs: how do you do it?

If you are interested in fostering for Hope Rescue you will need to complete a Foster Application form. A member of our fostering team will contact you for an initial chat to discuss fostering in more detail.

Please read the 'Frequently Asked Questions' (FAQs) at the bottom of the page for more information about fostering before you apply.

"Why I foster"

by a Hope Rescue foster carer

"There are many reasons why I foster, helping the dogs who have often been let down by humans is the main one. When they end up with incredible homes that send you photos like this with the message "Happy Christmas from Danny", it really makes my day!!

Danny came to Hope Rescue from a puppy farm type of situation. He was lucky that at 10 weeks old he didn't bear the mental scars that the older dogs taken from the same place had. But he was poorly though, with a very bad tummy, jumping with fleas and full of worms.

He was a very hard one to let go, but now has the best life in North Wales with dogs and horses and a very loving family. This is why I foster."

"Why we foster"

by a Hope Rescue foster family

"We’ve always loved dogs because we’ve grown up with them. They need a lot of commitment which is why it is so difficult to take on the responsibility of owning one when you are working and have a busy social life.

I had already fostered a couple of dogs in between jobs and found it very rewarding so a few years later when my partner’s job meant he could come home lunchtimes, we decided to pursue fostering again with Hope Rescue.

It’s always a bit daunting to start as you don’t necessarily know what kind of dog you will be having but I can honestly say no matter what their background, breed or temperament, we have loved all 8 dogs we have fostered. Some stayed 2 weeks, others for months but they become part of the family almost instantly and all you want to do is the best for them, ready for their forever home.

It is the most rewarding thing to see a dog about to give up on life suddenly have faith in humankind again with a bit of love and lots of cuddles….and treats!

I say we’ve helped the dogs by giving them a loving home but what they give in return far outweighs anything we could give them, both mentally and physically.

Friends always ask isn’t it difficult to give them up but I respond by saying we aren’t giving them up we are simply minding them until they find their new home where they will be safe and loved in an environment set up for full commitment.

Hope Rescue are so supportive too and always on hand if you need a break or advice.

I would recommend fostering to anyone who wants a dog but can’t commit fully. They are also great for getting you out and walking, lots! A very worthy voluntary role."
