Last week we were pleased to be able to work with the Animal Licensing Wales Team to help 33 dogs and puppies. These dogs were all signed over by a breeder whose licence was refused by Animal Licensing Wales. Despite working at capacity our welfare team pulled out all the stops for us to be able to support and bring these dogs to safety. The team worked late to process admin, arrange kennel space and foster homes, book in vet visits and most importantly comfort and settle the dogs into the beginning of the lives they deserve. Most of the group have moved to foster and are preparing to find their forever homes. We are extremely sad to report that one of the newborn puppies had died before our arrival and a further three died shortly after arrival into our care, despite the best efforts of the team.

On initial inspection there were obvious health issues and it was clear all had heavy flea and worm burdens along with ear mites and infections. Our vets came in for an additional day to examine all of the dogs and detected that number have heart murmurs with medication issued with further tests and examinations as follow up. Many of the dogs also have varied dental disease which will require cleaning and potentially extractions at a later date. We also discovered that two of the group are heavily pregnant, Phyllis a Cavalier and Sophie a Golden Retriever. Our team and foster homes are awaiting the additional new arrivals.

Providing treatment including treating parasite, providing dentals, heart scans, neutering and caring for the new puppies is likely to be in the region of £6,000. Whilst we were happy to support this very important operation, the costs of caring for the dogs was not predicted or budgeted.
