This month we have celebrated National Pet Month which showcases the special bond between human and pets. Sadly, it's coincided this year with the Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association’s annual pet population data which showed that a staggering 3.4 million pets were given up in the last 12 months, 60% of which were dogs. Here at Hope Rescue we have over 200 dogs in our care across the rescue centre and our foster homes. This includes stray dogs abandoned by their owners, dogs relinquished by their owners and dogs seized or signed over from illegal breeders. We have NEVER been this busy. On top of this we are receiving many calls on a daily basis from owners needing to surrender their pets. Many of these dogs have health or behaviour problems. We are also receiving calls from vets with clients who have brought their dogs in to be put to sleep. Apart from giving other rescue centre's details out we are helpless and the pressure of continually saying "sorry we can't help" is really taking its toll.
We are also still receiving fake strays too. This is not fair on other owners trying their hardest to keep their dogs until we have a space.
This is an animal welfare crisis, and with the current cost of living crisis the situation is only going to get worse. It's a very bleak outlook. As always, we will continue to ensure our dogs get the best care. We can't over commit, and need to work within our resources which are already stretched. We're taking on extra staff to help, but there is only so much we can do.
We are also seeing applications come in at a rapid rate with our 'popular' dogs receiving 100s of applications, where many of our more tricky dogs receive hardly any applications. We have a lot of dogs still under assessment due to complex health and/or behaviour issues and dogs that haven't yet been signed over due to pending investigations.
We are so grateful for the understanding, patience and most of all support at this time.
