Gorgeous little Dottie 3-year-old Staffie cross arrived at Hope Rescue a couple of weeks ago as a stray. She really is the most adorable, vibrant and playful girl. Sadly, Dottie arrived with a super rare and life-threatening health condition which is no doubt the reason she ended up as a stray. Dottie does not have an anus which has caused a rectovaginal fistula. The vet thinks that when she was trying to toilet as a puppy, faeces has had to find another way out which caused the fistula and the gas or stool now passes through her vagina. Dottie is also incontinent and at risk of regular urine infections. She is suffering with pain and discomfort every time she toilets and her welfare is significantly compromised.

After examination and investigation with our vets, we have two options - euthanasia or expensive life-saving surgery. One of our core values here at Hope Rescue is that we commit to every single stray from the six Local Authorities we support, whatever their breed, age or medical condition. That commitment is unwavering, so we are of course going to proceed with the surgery at Highcroft, a specialist vets in Bristol, on 21st April. This cutting-edge surgery will change Dottie’s life. It isn’t a common procedure and will cost just under £5,000. We didn’t hesitate to say “yes” to the surgery, but really need our supporters to help and become part of Dottie’s life-saving team.

Dottie has now moved in with one of our incredible foster families. Her condition does mean that there could be mess and odour but Kieran and Shannon are as dedicated and committed to giving dogs the best care as we all are here at Hope Rescue. Her owner may have abandoned her but ending up in the pound was the best thing that could have happened to Dottie as she now has Hope Rescue, her foster family and our army of supporters behind her.
