We finally revealed our BIG secret at Barking Mad…Hope Rescue is buying its own rescue centre! We still can’t really believe it ourselves as this has always been our aspiration and with everyone’s help, we can make this dream a reality.
Currently we do not own our own premises but instead we use commercial boarding spaces at two local kennels as well as a dedicated network of foster homes. Our kennel fees are one of our biggest expenses, costing £50,000 to £80,000 per annum. While we have a brilliant relationship with both kennel providers and the care they provide for our dogs is first class, we are somewhat restricted due to the commercial nature of the facilities. For example, we have to keep to kennel opening times, spaces are restricted during peak holiday season, volunteering opportunities are limited and we do not have access to secure off-lead exercise areas. It is also difficult logistically working across two sites and trying to organise vet work and transport runs, and meets and greets with foster homes and potential adopters can be complicated.
Our charity shop in Pontypridd is a great base from which to promote our work, but without our own facility much of that work is very much undertaken “behind the scenes”. For example, even within Rhondda Cynon Taff, Torfaen and Merthyr Tydfil people do not know we take ALL of their strays. Raising public awareness of our work is therefore hard work and we are reliant on social media and attendance at community events.
The benefits of owning our own facility include:
Improved welfare and enrichment for our dogs with facilities such as off lead exercise and indoor training space
Increased number of dogs available for adoption (in addition to our foster dogs)
The ability to help more dogs (both strays and owner surrenders)
Increased volunteer opportunities, including supported employment and volunteer placements
The opportunity cost of savings on boarding kennel fees
Expansion of our community outreach services including provision of temporary canine respite for owners facing crisis situations
Increased opportunities for public awareness and education
Increased opportunities for income generation and fundraising
Where will our rescue centre be located?
We have had an offer accepted on a property in Rhondda Cynon Taff. This is incredibly exciting for two reasons: firstly it has the most amazing facilities, including 80 kennels, two large exercise paddocks, a grooming room, indoor training centre, cattery (for conversion) and large grounds including 18 acres of private woodland with walks, which will transform the lives of our rescue dogs; secondly, we are working with Rhondda Cynon Taff CBC to take on their stray dog contract.
How our supporters can help to make this dream a reality
Purchasing the property will allow us to take on the Rhondda Cynon Taff stray dog contract (subject to approval) and keep a local facility for the residents. The facilities will truly transform the lives of our rescue dogs. The purchase will be financed through loan funding (subject to final approval of the business case). The total cost including purchase price, professional/admin fees and initial working capital is £700,000. We are looking to raise an initial £100,000 to help reduce the amount we need to borrow - if we can raise more, even better, as the lower the loan repayments the more money will be available to spend directly on the dogs! We only have a very short window of opportunity to raise this amount through donations and grant applications so really need your help!
We have set up a dedicated Justgiving campaign - this enables you to either make a direct donation or fundraise yourself with your own event!
You can also make a donation by texting HERO46 followed by an amount of £1, £2, £3, £4, £5 or £10 to 70070. We are also asking our supporters to share and tag 5 friends each asking them to support us then share and tag 5 freinds also. Just imagine how far our appeal could travel if each of our followers did this - and how much money we could raise if they all donated £1!
You can also make a donation through paypal and the address is email@example.com (please mark "Rescue Centre Appeal").
Cheques can be made payable to Hope Rescue and sent to 15 Coed y Pia, Llanbradach, CF83 3PT.
We will also be launching a crowdfunding page aimed at corporate sponsors. More details to follow. If your business is interested in supporting us then please do get in touch by emailing us on firstname.lastname@example.org
This represents a huge step-change in what we can do to improve the lives of stray and abandoned dogs.
